Client get a game update when they run the game. Half-Life 2 has already gone gold (get with the times!)
When Half-Life 2 is release, there'll most likely be an update to steam, to allow you access to Half-Life 2, as well as there being a game update which you'll get when you run it (or when steam decides to automagically aquire it)
