Let's start by insuring that the "ghost" image of the server is accurate. Go
to a machine that is NOT able to run under SP1. Here do one of two things.
Either "-verify" the files or pull a new copy of the entire server. Let's do
something less detailed and that has a higher probability of accuracy. Copy
the hldsupdatetool.exe file to a folder. Let's say c:\gameservers\test. Now
run this command line instruction: "c:\gameservers\test\hldsupdatetool.exe
-command -update -game cstrike -dir c:\gameservers\test\cs1".

This will pull a fresh copy of the CS 1.6 files to this computer. After
which execute the command line that you have quoted in your previous
communication. IF any error is noted then there is something amiss. IF no
errors are reported then it would be safe to assume that the "ghost" of your
server is not complete/accurate. In that event, on the computer you refer to
previously, place the hldsupdatetool.exe in the "c:\gameservers" location.
Then execute the following command: "c:\gameservers\hldsupdatetool.exe
-command update -game cstrike -dir c:\gameservers\cs -verify_all". This will
check each of the files for accuracy and insure that the copy is indeed
adequate for running the server. After which you may attempt to run the
server again with the command line execute you quoted and report back to
this list again.

Subject: RE: [hlds] Windows 2003 with sp1 = no hlds

I know what you you mean, I couldnt really think it was sp1 also.

Here is some background

the boxes are absolutely identical (they are actually a ghost of each
other.)

12 contain w2k3 patched all the way up except sp1

3 contain w2k3 with sp1

All have the same virus scan and programs installed, and are running exactly
the same hl1, hl2, and cod files. (I have a central install box)

All have the same settings except whatever sp1 sets as default security
settings.

I have attempted to run cs 1.6. I use the same command line on all the
serverers except for the ip

the command line is: c:\gameservers\cs\hlds.exe -console -game
cstrike -maxplayers 20 +ip xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx +map de_dust

I have tried the -nojoy and -noipx also no result.

The error is : category 100 event id 1000

Faulting application hlds.exe, version 4.1.1.1, faulting module hlds.exe

Here is the dr watson event id : 4097

The application, C:\gameservers\cs\hlds\hlds.exe, generated an application
error The error occurred on 04/19/2005 @ 21:20:50.828 The exception
generated was c0000005 at address 01705828 (hlds!CreateInterface)

Now to resolve this, I simply uninstalled sp1 and patched the machine up to
where the others are.
The same files, and the same command line now work.
Install sp1 and then they stop working again with this error.

If it is not related to sp1, I'm stumped as to what else it could be. I am
sure there must be a way to get it running with sp1 perhaps a heapsize
setting or some such. Its good to know that srcds and cod work fine though.

"HL1"? Please define the mod you want to run. We have multiple Win2K3
servers with SP1 and all are running fine. I would suspect something amiss
in your pull of the files or with your command startup line before I would
suspect SP1 having anything to do with it. There may be something else going
on in the OS that would prevent it running but I can't attribute it to SP1
without some further information. Let's start with your command line (minus
any sensitive information) and a copy of the errors you are receiving.

Hi,

I have several new computers with w2k3 server. I have implemented 3 with sp1
on new installs. They are unable to run hlds (hl1) the server starts, but
then shuts down with an exception in the event log. These machines are
identical. The ones with no sp1 can run it fine, once I uninstalled sp1 from
one of the machines it is able to run hlds again. Reinstall it and it wont
run. It appears hlds has an issue with sp1 on w2k3. By the way srcds runs
fine as do other dedicated servers. It apparently is just hlds. Anyone get
hlds (hl1) working on w2k3 sp1?
