There are several compression types out there, and most are much better at compression than the ZIP standard. RAR is probably the next in line in popularity. On the *nix side, gzipped files are the most common, but bzip2 is better and becoming more and more popular all the time. 7zip pwnz them all though. But it's really slow so it's not used much.
