I too have similar questions although primarily for my own use as a client
rather than for a server. Where are some good links for the console tweaks
that are allowed? I am not a cheater and do not want to do anything in any
way underhanded. I do want to optimize my experience. I don't know if it
matters from game to game or if all the valve games would all be the same
but "day of defeat" is the game I play primarily. I had some links on my
old computer, which took me a long time to find, but unfortunately I think
I've lost them all. Dod is a rather old game and even back a year or so ago
when I was looking them up the sites didn't seem to be updated frequently.

I believe the entire list of console commands may have at one time been
published on gamespy or halflifeworld (something like that) but by the time
I looked it wasn't there. It had a message about hacking or something.
Perhaps people were using commands they should have not been using.

The only ones I can recall at the moment are:

net_graph_3 -for getting the fps display

stopsound -in game for getting the background sound effects to
stop-apparently has to be done each mapchange

maxfps_ #or is it fps_max#? I think it is 72 by default, as I couldn't
figure out why I was only getting 72 max until I started fooling around with
the console a bit and raised it to 99

I remember max_rate and min_rate discussed below but don't recall where to
set them. Also most of you guys that post have far more technical knowledge
than I and are running your own servers so I'm not sure whether the
information below applies to me as a client or not. I saw someone in a game
complaining about someone's rates the other day so I assume there is a way
to take unfair advantage by tweaking that one out too high.

I have done as you describe, and I have no argument with the fact that
such a high level of bandiwdth is used. As with you, this is why I
would like to see a whitepaper.
