ISTR they existed side by side during the 1.6 and Steam beta.
according to wiki, 1.6 was released 15th sept 03 and i think was in beta
in june 03 certainly.

I don't think it's been that long cause that would mean steam has
been out that long which it hasn't. I think it was early last year
