I go to Lanwar quite a bit, pretty big lan for those that do not know.
They designate a specific day (usually late two days before the lan)
where they tell everyone NOT to start steam again until the lan
starts. The lans usually start Sat. they tell everyone not to start
steam any later than 12:00 am Thursday. This insures that everyone has
the same version and can play together (a bunch always screw it up
anyways).

Yeah, but this method has proven in the past to be tricky to say the
least ;) And most people, certainly on broadband connections, like
myself ;), have Steam on auto-update at OS boot.

You can share the gcf files in C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps
and update anyone who needs it that way, I have three legitimate
copies of hl2 in my house networked, since I am on dial-up I update
one of them, then I just share those files to update the others and
copy them over, seems to work just fine for me.

This sounds like a good suggestion, I'll certainly give this a try.

Thanks for your help!
