From what I've heard from others, it seems to be directly related to the AMD
processors themselves (although the linux srcds surely isn't helping
either). I can't give a direct performance related comparison, but I know of
many people that have done so; the intel based systems showed more stability
when it came to source (remember, we're talking source here, I'm not bashing
opterons for other uses), and, in addition, windows 2k3 does seem to prove a
more stable environment (however, to my knowledge, the benchmarks were
conducted seperately, so I can't say the intel+linux is better than the
amd+win2k3 or whatnot), minus the occaisional memory referencing error that
we have on some of our dedicated boxes (bump: if anyone knows a fix for

In reply to Tef:

Yes I was referring to tic rate, high tic rate servers use much more cpu
resources.

I can only correlate to what we use; we run Dual 2.8Ghz Xeon 64bit machines
with windows 2003 server as an OS. We use an irc eggdrop to be able to get
more server fps out of the HL engine, we tried flash apps and hlbooster in
the past but up to this date I prefer eggdrop as it gives the most stable
fps.

HL servers above ~16slots that use high tic rates and server fps; use
between 16 and 24% cpu on our servers.

U say u wants to run 4 24 player servers on high tic rates.
So then u would need a system that's a bit more powerful, then a dual xeon
2.8 GHz.

I would go with AMD Opteron, they can handle more load continuasly before
performance drops and they have a lower internal latency, also u can put
dual core opteron cpu's (these are really 2 cpu's in one cpu package) in
the
same motherboard as single core opterons.

If u were to go with Xeons, and u would like to upgrade your system to the
upcoming dual core xeon's, u would also need to buy another motherboard.

So besides more performance and lower latency, u also get a more scalable
system if u are going to use AMD.

We bought our Xeon machines last year, in the assumption we could stick
dual
core xeon's in them once they were available, unfortunately intel is going
to use a different chipset to support their dual core cpu's (so much for
scalability).

If I were u I would be looking for a server with one dual core Opteron 265
or 270 in it.
It would be enough to run your 4 servers, and u could later put another
dual
core Opteron cpu in it, so u can run even more servers on the system.

Supermicro sells pre-build Intel and Amd systems, aswell as barebone
systems
(barebone: server case with installed motherboard and accessories, so u
only
need to drop in the cpu's, ram and harddrive/s).
U could contact Supermicro www.supermicro.com and ask them if they know
about any supermicro authorized system integrator in the UK.

In reply to Phil:
Is this memory leak only in combination Linux Opteron, or also with Windows
Opteron?
And how fast does it leak, Could it be prevented by resetting the servers
every night?

I don't have anything written on hand per se, but I can point out that
several GSP's (most notably probably hd-gaming.com) have given up hosting
source due it's insane environment (quite coincidentally, companies that
use
the linux version on opteron processors ;) ).
I'm sure that more to support this argument could be found by browsing the
steam forums.
