As it just got mentioned, I thought I'd slap in an observation of mine. Yesterday, I watched the steam.exe client binary attempt to access every single protected process running on one system. In the process of a client playing for about 20 minutes, this generated over 400 "SYMANTEC TAMPER PROTECTION ALERT" errors. For some reason it was attempting to access other running binaries on the system.
Some logs: SYMANTEC TAMPER PROTECTION ALERT Target: C:\PROGRA~1\SYMANT~1\VPTray.exe Event Info: Open Process Action Taken: Blocked Actor Process: D:\mydocs\_games_\steam\steam.exe (PID 1368) SYMANTEC TAMPER PROTECTION ALERT Target: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccSetMgr.exe Event Info: Open Process Action Taken: Blocked Actor Process: D:\mydocs\_games_\steam\steam.exe (PID 1368) Target: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccApp.exe Event Info: Open Process Action Taken: Blocked Actor Process: D:\mydocs\_games_\steam\steam.exe (PID 1368) SYMANTEC TAMPER PROTECTION ALERT Target: C:\Program Files\Symantec AntiVirus\Rtvscan.exe Event Info: Open Process Action Taken: Blocked Actor Process: D:\mydocs\_games_\steam\steam.exe (PID 1368) Now I have verified the files on this system using a BartPE disc and updated definitions, and there is certainly no infection present, unless it is not detected by four of the major anti-virus vendors. I would love to know just what it is that steam is trying to do, but it has absolutely no right to be attempting to touch these files. Further investigation pending.
