Hi again! Just wanted to thank you all for your input. As it happens, the servers have been ordered. We're looking at 8 ProLiant DL145 G2 Opteron 246 servers with 2GB RAM each. Delivery should be sometime early next week.
Just to clarify, *we* are the GSP in this matter, and the servers as well as their hosting are donated by a local ISP. They proposed the aforementioned systems and subsequently chose to buy them, so there wasn't really a chance for some custom-built systems. Believe me, I compiled the specs for several different alternatives. I think we can be pleased with the outcome, though.
