        My understanding is the engine already has this built in, the
same routines that determine the sounds of gunfire dynamically across
the map and spoken words and sounds in HL single-player.  It's really
up to the game or mod developer to use them.

        Alfred has graciously put me in contact with some developers
in Valve regarding expanding the closed-captioning.  If there's
nothing server-side I need to set up I think I'm good.

        It's going to be interesting playing on a server with sv_voice
at zero.  I don't think I've seen that since the voice-comms were enabled.
