Unless that satellite is in a -really- low orbit, you can pretty
much forget playing any game that requires consistant low
latency. It's four very long hops for a packet to bounce up
down and back to you via the same process. And at this
point they still have not really licked that whole 'speed of light'
thing yet.

I was on the original start-up team for a particularly successful
internet service provider back in the mid-90's that loved turning
arcane military technology into cash printing machines. I got
to tweak quite a bit on the available satellite rigs, and the best
we could ever manage for a 'broadband' solution was using the
satellite uplink/downlink for your 'downstream' and using a
regular old POTS dial-up for your 'upstream' creating an asynchronous
traffic path that was a stability and routing nightmare. It was
half-assed, but it it worked it cut the latency 50%... But nowhere
near enough to play FPS games... still very bursty.

That little engineering gem actually went to market, but not in
satellite form.

A nice fat bidirectional satellite pipe would be excellent for a Big
Peer to Peer Fileserver (nudge). Do you happen to have a decent
gaming/internet cafe within driving distance? (shrug)

connection?

I tried your suggestions but still can't seem to even log onto a server. I
entered the three tweaks you gave me in the console and added your server to
favorites by isp:

(Rate 3000 to 5000 you may want to try lower like around 2500. I'm not
sure
how low you can go.
Cl_updaterate 10 or 20 don't go any lower then 10.
Cl_cmdrate 10 to 20 don't go any lower then 10.

Also you might want to disable all of the other things that lower FPS too
just incase you are able to connect and play some.
Heres my servers IP address 64.69.32.190:27015 www.ethugsrus.net)

I still can't seem to get on. I'm wondering if something is bugged. I've
only tried to play a handful of times because I knew it would basically be
unplayable. The very first time and one other time I've logged onto a
server. The other times I don't even connect. Do most servers have a
maximum ping limit to keep lag down or do I have a bug/isp or computer
problem?

What other tweaks could I use?

Over the course of play I thought I had most all of the tweaks that were
considered legitimate but was always a bit paronoid of being called a
cheater to push too far into them due to the fact that apparently there
are/were a lot of people who did/do cheat these game. I wasn't exactly sure
what was legit and what wasn't since I don't know enough to understand what
the tweaks are actually doing. I want an honest game. Otherwise what's the
point?

I think the three items you told me to change were all different but I was
on comcast cable when I used to play dod 24/7. :>)

P.S. I'm not sure why I am suddenly "joansing" to play this game so much
but what would it take to revert back to pre-steam so I could shoot up some
sturmbots? I notice the folder seems to still be in two different
locations. I'm wondering if I could open dod from the old location and play
it pre-steam or if there are any good bots with steam anymore. I guess it's
time to do a google search, lol.

Anyway sorry to bug all you computer server pros with my very player
specific gaming question. Have a good evening all.
