Yes, thats always the 'first thing' I do when presented with a problem. I have 
several friends, my self included, who cant even load l4d2 and run the campaign 
locally.

Did you try running -verify_all in updatetool? Try reinstalling the server
(srcds), Im running a couple of boxes on Server 2003 and 2008 R2 fine.
