It was my impression that the old servers were no longer going to function once the clients were switched over to SteamPipe. So this is not the case?

I still have my old server installations.. maybe I should switch back until these performance issues are worked out.

With all the things I keep reading about to do with Steampipe servers, e.g. CPU spikes, RAM usage (here), and another MvM server not receiving the same amount of matchmaker traffic compared to hldsupdatetool server version, I'm sticking to the hldsupdatetool server version until an update forces me to change to Steampipe. I'm sure whatever the problem is will be resolved eventually, just difficult to locate I guess.

Since the steampipe switchover i've noticed my server
instances are using a lot more ram.

Before steampipe my 32slot idle servers where running at
        around 300-500 mb, now they're 700-900 mb?

        MVM servers are 900-1000+mb?

Is this normal? is there anything i can do to reduce ram
usage? I've always had around 25% ram free on my dedi, since
steampipe its now more like 10-5% free, i fear i'm going to
have to either shutdown one of my servers or scrape together
some more funds to upgrade my dedi
