Also, most of the addons developed today are from seasoned 3rd party coders. Every once in a while you will see questions asked in here or in the hlcoders list (depending on the question). I also think that there are more quality utilities today than in the past. There may not be utilities in "masses", but the ones that are actively worked on do a lot more than the scattered ones in the past.
Besides, a few of the seasoned, original 3rd party coders now work for either Gearbox or Valve.
