I have a similar issue. My server shuts down when I receive the error
".../gearbox/custom.hp2 Access permission denied" and puts me back to my
shell prompt

Please note that custom.hp2 is not a typo that's my error not this .hpk
extension the .hpk file exists the other one doesn't. If this is a
permission thing in reference to who is running the server root, or HL user
then why do some clients work and one doesn't.

I am running Red Hat 7.2 on a i386 AMD 333 on a home lan for now. I get this
error for only one client out of 3. In previous issues I was able to delete
the config file and let HL create a new one, that however is not the issue.
I can copy the same config from a client that works and that still doesn't
help. The reference to the config is my way of making sure the
download/upload and logos are the same not to mention there is no custom
logos being used even if I use the HL logo it still fails. I am going to try
a read write permission to the gearbox directory and if it works but I do
not consider this a fix for a Internet server. In the previous messages
there was no resolve anyone have a true answer please reply
