Your right, I am sorry I arrogantly assumed you meant CS. There is CS and everything else. That "everything else" sector is about 10-20% of CS players at any given time if you look at gamespy live stats. The next closest is DoD or TFC but they typically only have 5k players when CS has about 60k. CS has coughed up the check for HL's success when it comes to the multiplayer mods. They are not paying bills with cash generated from HLDM players, that's for certain! Not to put the single player game down, it was a great game on it's own and no doubt the most significant, initial sales factor. However, there is a good portion of customers who bought the game just for a multiplayer mod, even more that stayed interested and bought more copies and/or servers because of the multiplayer mods. This is an old, old game by any standard, the fact that it still has the huge following is simply amazing. I said this once a couple weeks ago and I think it sums the whole HL multiplayer empire up in two lines... at least the last few years of it. 1. The reason there are so many HL servers is because they are cheap. 2. The reason they are cheap is because of the low cpu requirements. If Valve servers require the same resources as a (insert about any other game here) server, your going to see that empire crumble. HL2 will do just fine, all I am saying is that this big Valve influence on multiplayer gaming will be over. As it is now, DoD is going out of the price range for the average server owner and if you run CS or TFC under 3.1.1.1, prices are going up or an already narrow profit margin is going down. I hate to say it but another era of gaming is drawing to a close. There was Doom, Quake and then our beloved CS/TFC/DOD/ETC... I know that sounds gloomy but a better game is around the corner somewhere and time will tell who comes out on top for the next ride. The sad part is that inexpensive gameservers the average player (kids) can afford are going to be history along with the cottage industry that supported them. You right, enjoy 3.1.1.0.c while it works because even the established mods will eventually require updating to the piggy version. Rick -- --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free.
