Sylpheed in linux does what you want. It needs X and gtk. It handled threading fine but I get this list in digest form now because I think it's easier. Anyway, there's also a version called sylpheed-claws which is "unstable" but it works just fine, and livin on the edge is more fun anyway ;-)
You can also try balsa which requires gnome - IIRC it handles threading just fine as well. -- "Software piracy harms everyone, including you.
