Eaglecc,

In addition to Florian's comments about RH, I have a few details to add.

I run a RH 7.3 box with NS currently, starting with the 1.04 version of NS
it was impossible to run it with the precompiled/prepackaged version of
adminmod. Since then, someone in the community recompiled AM and released
the RH compiled binaries to admins which solved the crashing issues with NS
1.04 and Redhat systems. This is available in the server op forums on the
NS boards. If you can't find it there I could always e-mail it to you.

As for performance difference there isn't a whole heck of a lot of
difference, from what I've heard. There are so many variables that can
change it's really hard to tell what the real truth is. If someone reports
that their CPU usage is 80% and don't mention they are running "pingboost 3"
it can really throw off people's perception of performance. In the end, NS
does need a lot of horsepower to run smoothly and that's mostly the cause of
the massive amounts of entities in the game, something that will be cut back
in NS 1.1 to make CPU usage less demanding.

I'm also a beta server op for NS and I hope to test out the Linux build when
it becomes available (soon). I hope the issues with RedHat are resolved but
I'm not holding my breath as it doesn't seem to be directly an NS problem.
Rather, the problem seems to be a combination of AM working with NS. Why RH
would deviate from the standard gcc version I'll never understand, and it is
that deviation which seems to cause most of the headaches people see.

Subject: [hlds_linux] NS on Redhat 9 ?

Hello,
Thanks for your help on the last problem (and sorry it was to the wrong
list). Roob's server is getting back to normal.
On to my next question.
I have run linux HL servers before and prefer linux as a server system
because of it's stability and flexability but my distro of choice is Redhat.
That's what I had to learn for work and Debian just winds me up. So we are
going to be renting a server to replace Roob's current set up. P4 2.4g
(hdd=40Gb ide) 512mb ram. This should be more than enough to run Natural
Selection but I have heard lots of bad stuff about NS performance/bugs under
linux.
Does anyone here run NS in linux?
How is it? Is it worth it or should I stick with windoze until it's sorted.?
Do any of you use Rh9 with the latest hlds?
Are there any scarey things I need to be wary of?
Thanks guys,
Eaglec
