Using a p4 3.06 (HT) I was able to host 28 players dod on cpu0, and 12-14
players dod on cpu1, this placed both cpu's at 100%.

Reviewing the documentation published by IBM
(http://www-106.ibm.com/developerworks/linux/library/l-htl/), with the right
application you will see up to a 51% increase in performance with hyper
threading enabled as opposed to not. I'm using it on a P4 3.06 running
Gentoo optimized for the p4, and two dual xeons (so "quad" boxes) running
slackware, all three running 2.5.73 with pre-emptive enabled. From what I
can tell you can server more with hyper threading enabled as opposed to
without it. This also enables you to do other tasks while you server, so
hyper threading makes real sense to hosting your website, mysql and server
all on the same box.

Bottom line however, intel really blows... for the price, you just don't get
the performance. AMD's are still significantly better processors suited
well to game serving. I'm praying that everyone shows enough interest in
Valve, and other game companies releasing P4 optimized versions of their
binaries because the p4 really blows ass on legacy code... it REALLY needs
those SSE/SSE2 optimizations amongst other things.

I've asked both alfred and matt for p4 optimized (hey, and AMD athlon opt
would kill as well) binaries of both hlds and dod, and I know its something
that they showed interest in, so who knows.
