1. my server is insecure - how do I make it secure and what does this actually do?
You need internet access to download the secure modules. The readme states which ports need to be open (at the very end).
2. my linux box is only running the one service - HL server so that's pretty secure and I have no X etc, just a kernel, shell and networking support. I am running 3.1.1.1 (on a celeron400!!) is there any security risk from this version?
Yepp, there is a HUGE security bug. Get 3.1.1.1d ASAP. And btw, never run as root.
3. how do I stop cheating to about the best level possible these days? I don't really want to use CD but is there any other good way?
VAC is pretty much it if you don't want people to download third party stuff.
4. is there anything else I should know about admin'ing a good HL server?
Lots, Lots and some more. Too much to complie and post in a single mail though, but start looking at forums and the mailarchives.
