For those that want to apply a "clean" fix to this problem, debian
released glibc-2.3.2-4 today, fixing a problem within the FILE I/O
implementation, that caused problems with programs dynamically linked
against old glibc's, like the hlds 3.1.1.0 series.

After upgrading to 2.3.2-4, your hlds shouldn't crash anymore (at least
not because of a problem with glibc ;))
