Well is sounds to me based on the "roadmap" from Erik Johnson that this has
changed and that within 2 weeks of the release of steam the ENTIRE user base
will be converted to steam (the final release of 1.6 anyone?).

I would also like to add a "me too"  for the lan without internet issue.  It
seems to go even further than just lan though.  It sounds like for HL2 once
you update your game (steam only update) or play online, you can't even play
the singleplayer anymore without authenticating with the steam servers.  The
game will not run without steam authentication even if you have the CD in
the drive.  I don't know if the hl2 stuff is true or not, but there hasn't
been a clear response from valve or at least I haven't found one yet.
