The only solution -> would be to create a port forwarding proxy on the network, then have -> clients connect to the proxy so that to the server it appears they -> 'are' the proxy and are therefore on LAN with the server. -> -> This was tried way back with HL 1.1.0.0 and although it worked it -> never achieved any widespread use. -> -> -Simon What I'm saying is to look into coming up with a way to do just that - allow the clients to auth to some other mechanism. The same network/subnet thing isn't what I want to try, but in the same respect that they get validated thru WON.net now, I'd think there is some way to do it that does not infringe on copyrights, patents, or intellectual property. !-- begin sarcasm-- Then again, SCO will probably sue us for this too. --End Sarcasm--! Still, I'm gonna start looking into it, and a few ppl have voiced their interest in working on it, so for now I'll create a mailing list, start doing some tcp and udp dumps, and see just what's goin on. Ideas and comments are very appreciated though. On the side note, I am still not able to DL the new server binaries for testing, and clients are supposed to be out today. www.steampowered.com is getting hammered, and ftp.valvesoftware.com is unresponsive. There is a "RUMOR" that Valve is addressing the inet/lan issue but no official word I've seen, and so far I cannot test a server for load factors yet. On top of all that, my business partner and I spoke last nite for about an hour regarding this situation and both of us came to the same conclusion: This whole thing stinks, and if we can't run 3.1.1.0x, and 3.1.1.1x or steam doesn't perform as such, we remove our 3 remaining public servers and 2 rentals in favor of Q3 and BF1942 before WON goes down. Erik, Eric, and Alfred: I know you read this, and perhaps you don't have the decision-making authority, or the control of the direction of the project, but someone damn well better let those that do know WTF is going on within this community because the consensus so far is this is an abomination as it stands and many, many servers will shut down and the players will find something else to play, especially when there will be so few servers left. Last year, I bought a new laptop from a major MFG (im not going to say who). I reconfigured and used my shiny new laptop every day, until one day it started to run very slow. I called for and RMA to have it fixed under warranty, however the tech folks refused to listen to what I told them the problem was, ignoring my complaints. After 6 weeks of bantering, someone finally, and reluctantly agreed to accept it for repair. 8 days later the machine was returned to me, with the drive re-imaged from a 'restore' disk, back to the default installation. Last Friday I returned it for credit under warranty, and orderd a new machine from another manufacturer. I am not upset the hardware faulted - it happens sometimes. But I will never do business with them again because of how they treated me - their customer. Right now, Valve, you are on the exact same course. Public and private servers promote your game, increase your sales, and generate more interest. If the marketing plan doesn't include for listening to your biggest supporters, your supporters will find something else to support.
