standard IANAL but if you read the EULA you'll see this:
<snip>
    3.  Responsibilities of End User.
        A. Subject to the license grant above, you may not, in whole
or in part, copy, photocopy, reproduce, translate, reverse engineer, derive
source code, modify, disassemble, decompile, or create derivative works
based on the Program, or remove any proprietary notices or labels on the
Program without the prior consent, in writing, of Valve.
</snip>

since cracks actually modify the files, you're violating the EULA ... however,
if it's a shared library that is preloaded and intercepts function calls as
their made ... you didnt reverse engineer it so you're not violating the
EULA ;)

in the end, lack of LAN support in steam == retardness so i'd personally say
use the crack, play it on a LAN, and goddamn have some fun :P

that is of course unless you're doing some kind of crazy state/national
tournament or something ... now that you're getting a little official (i.e.
organizations are putting their names behind it) you might want to get a
little more anal about it ... then again, so should have valve ;)
