You must be new to the list. =) In a nutshell, there are problems with the processor usage running the Linux binaries. It's something Valve knows about and is actively working on right now.
Windows servers don't have the same issues, and it's not an Intel or AMD thing. I've got a dual Xeon 2.0 GHz box that can hold maybe 80 players if I'm lucky. We've been waiting awhile for these fixes, and Valve is now working on hooking us up. On my RedHat 9 system dual AthlonMP 2000, each server spikes up 50, 80 or 100 and with players in it uses around 20% avg and goes up to 80-100, yet the %idle never seems to drop below 70%. Also vmstat reports little cpu usage in the user space. 53 processes: 52 sleeping, 1 running, 0 zombie, 0 stopped CPU0 states: 5.4% user 0.2% system 0.0% nice 0.0% iowait 93.3% idle CPU1 states: 4.2% user 1.0% system 0.0% nice 0.0% iowait 94.1% idle Mem: 1029856k av, 318820k used, 711036k free, 0k shrd, 11612k buff 279644k actv, 380k in_d, 228k in_c Swap: 2040244k av, 2992k used, 2037252k free 130956k cached PID USER PRI NI SIZE RSS SHARE STAT %CPU %MEM TIME CPU COMMAND 1986 gameserv 15 0 58668 57M 5176 S 55.7 5.6 6:17 0 hlds_amd 55.7% cpu use? can anything explain this.
