But, my players actually do complain about lag and they actually mention numbers that appear to agree with what I'm seeing in the `status` output. Don't know what to think yet.

I've got the same "problem", but the ping you are seeing is not the ping that the players are seeing on the server. Then I've assumed that the ping we're seeing in console isn't right as the players are not complaining :)
