One thing you will have to make sure of is that you do not have TOO many log files in the dir, empty it out and restart your server. I think i had this problem before too, and after i emptied out the folder it started working again.
I put mine in monthly subdirs. Also convenient for searching for patterns by month, etc. heh, the egrep command won't work on too many files either.
