Following up on my previous post... I restarted steam, and this time it gives me a validating games message and goes through and does it's little steam validation thingy.
I fire up HL2 again, and pick up from my last save point... no dice. So I go back to the last save point before this level "water hazard". I do the whole level over and wahlah. Everything is fine now... http://img60.exs.cx/img60/4190/hl2OK.jpg So I guess it just hadn't finished loading and or validating.... which is wierd because it said it was all OK.
