Indeed.
Just run the SNMP server on the box and it's the same as polling a router. Only difference is the router comes with an SNMP server installed and running ;p
If it's BSD then the port net-snmp is what you want.

After doing some reading, I understand that mrtg can pull bandwidth information off an interface, without it polling a router. What I cant find is an example of how this is done. Could someone please provide me some information on how to do this? Maybe give an example? Thank you.
