I'd put 20 cents (NZD) on the server engine updates being independent
of the client updates.

Regardless, clients are forced to update while servers are optional. If a server chooses not to upgrade until it's stable, no one will be able to play on your server anyway.

if a server chooses not to upgrade, it will lost its players. so, the server are forced to upgrade anyhow. thats no different.

My point was -- dedicated server engine internals *ought* to be (and my 20 cents says they are) independent of the client. e.g., the updates today -- there were client updates with the new hl2mp maps, and there were server updates. The server needs the new maps, but the client does not need the new server engine.
