anyone know where to get a i386 version of gentoo or one that will work on a p4 system (new to linux) for download? I want to try gentoo since it seems to be the craze on this mail list
You'll probably want to start with the latest universal livecd.
Choose a mirror from here: http://www.gentoo.org/main/en/mirrors.xml and then download pub/gentoo/releases/x86/2004.3/livecd/install-x86-universal-2004.3-r1.iso. Or, alternately, use bittorrent: http://torrents.gentoo.org/torrents/install-x86-universal-2004.3-r1.iso.torrent
Then get ready for one of the longest and most complicated OS installation procedures. Luckily, the Gentoo folks do a good job of leading you through it: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/index.xml
