The release in which .res files were no longer needed was Release V1.1.0c (6th April 2005)

I have never said that .res files has something to do with playback ... only the files to upload are listed! And to let Mani-Admin work, you have to place all sound files into every res file to ensure that a joined player gets all the sound files!
Pretty sure that's not required any more. Check the latest update on mani's web site amazing what u will find if you RTFM.

At the time time I had been messing with this 1.1.0d was the newest and their information was a bit vauge. I do see that the day I had posted my question they had releasd a newer version with updated DL setup information and cvars. Just yesterday they have releasd yet another.. I do not ask questions without first trying to track down information on my own...
