as Opterons, yeah. But Athlon64 desktop stuff is still relatively new, not to mention 64bit windows only just got released recently. 64bit versions of linux have been around a relatively long time for the CPUs, yeah. It'll pick up steam now that desktop versions of the CPUs and an OS for them are now readily available. No pun intended. I think for us the bigger deal will be having 64bit clients as games get more detailed. For the server side of things, at least for a single game server, I don't think there will be much of a benefit anyway since memory usage there is quite a bit smaller than the client side of things. When you start talking about multiple game servers running then perhaps the whole picture will benefit more than a single process will. Hard to say.
I don't know the details of their 64bit versions, but if it means a lot more maintenance than simply recompiling I can understand putting it closer to the backburner for the time being. I'm not sure that it does or does not require more than simply recompiling for them, but I understand in some cases for some software that's all that's required. Even if all that allowed you to do was use the extra CPU registers, that'd be at least some performance gain, no matter how meek.
