you shouldn't mount /proc as linprocfs they are different formats.
Instead you should define:
options         LINPROCFS
in your kernel config and then mount linproc under /compat/linux/proc
the fstab line should look like:
linproc /compat/linux/proc  linprocfs   rw  0   0

Wow i didn't even think about that.  I mounted /proc as linprocfs and
it's working flawlessly.

I'm still a bit curious why it is an intermittent issue where it starts
50% of the time without /proc, and why it did not do this before the
last update, but as long as it's working i'm happy.
