$client was installing in /usr/local/games - I tried it my way and did
it from a user account and it worked fine. Sorry for wasting your time!

The machine has glibc2.3.5-10.3 - clearly newer than the version
specified in the error. I'm out of ideas as to why this is happening, if
anyone could give me a bump in the right direction I'd be extremely
greatful.
