Or you decide to run your very own home made and backed kernel... Not too hard, and I like my boxes running the latest stable. That tends to have a better upkeep with regards to security patches.
As for the question at hand: Personally, if it weren't for the licencing cost, I'd perhaps would have chosen Win2003 just for knowing that OS best, and more generic hardware support, leaving me work easily with nV-RAID for a simple mirror instead of having to go through miles of howto's to get linux running on an nForce4 chip with the fun of (fake)hardware raid. (and ofcausegetting some on this list rather upset by claiming it be the best OS ever ^_^) On the other hand, Linux is probably better suited to run on a box in a colocation, and perhaps a little better performance on the same hardware. At least you don't have to license the OS. Each choice has pro's and con's I like Slackware, just because it's clean, streightforward, and has a BSD stylish init system. Personally I've never learned to work with SysV, and still don't realy get it. If you're new to Linux and unbiassed, just get something that's quick to learn the basics, and Fedora would probably be one of the choices. Just make sure it has a GLIBC that's current enough to run hlds_l or srcds_l. Slack 10 still requires a GLIB update to run a halflife dedicated server which is perhaps a problem if you're new to linux. (available in /test, it isn't installed by default.) Ask 50 linux fans what you should use, you'll have probably 40 different answers what is best. In the end I can only agree to what Erik told already. Anything recent works, and most of it is pretty much the same. Your reasons for choosing is with what you like and know best. Just never use X on your box: It's a waste of resouces... (what was I saying again about running Windows 2003 on a gameserver box? ;-) ) Just pick something.
