Do you renice the processes? There is a known issue with nice and the
source engine.
Other then that the only thing i can think of is the custom maps that
you are running. Maybe try on a standard map for debugging.

No renicing at all and this happens on standard maps. (In fact outside
of the gungame and ES server we run only standard maps. Two of the
servers are 40 player office and italy servers. 2 are 40 player standard
map servers, one is a 16 player gungame and the new one is a 16 player
Eternal Silence.
All but the Eternal silence run Mani. I thought it must be mani at first
but the Eternal Silence server has exactly the same problem

I'd rather know why there appears to be a 99% cpu bug and why building
my own kernel will fix it before I go to that much work. Which bit of my
stock kernel is causing the problem? I'd obviously need to know that
before I did anything.
This isn't a "My server is too slow". This is a "my server is fast
enough but something craps out randomly"

Yes the gamers do, but the problem lies with the valve server browser.
Not matter what you select the list to be sorted by, the browser always
starts refreshing at low ipranges and works upwards to higher ranges.
Because of that fact most Gamers wont even see Servers with ranges above
200.X because it takes some time get even some of them, and because ppl
are impatient they are connected to one of the servers that are already
refreshed (one of the 80.X).
For me it takes some minutes to get a bunch of servers above 90.X
because of the huge number of low range servers.

This information is totally wrong.
The master servers return from around your IP address first and then
fans outwards, both up and down the list of numerically sorted IPs.

Reply-To: [email protected]
hi list,
we already tried several ways to define a specific content server, when
running a ./steam -command update including setting up
PreferredContentServerIDs in a Steam.cfg file located next to the steam
binary, but without success.
Could someone explain how to user PreferredContentServerIDs in the
correct manner and where to store the Steam.cfg?
Any help would be very much appreciated.

Hi,
Found this old information on the list:
"We released the new HldsUpdateTool today, which has the capability to let
people suggest preferred content servers.
To use it, you need to create a file in the same directory as the tool
called Steam.cfg (the S has to be uppercase on Linux), and put the
following
line in it:
PreferredContentServerIDs = "x y z etc"
(again case is important)
Where x y and z are the IDs of the CSes they'd like to go to first. EG
computergames.ro would put "1 31". You can list as many as you want."
greetings

that's what we found too, but i can't get it to work :o(
it seems that the steam server ignores this setup.

Have you guys thought of enhancing this to take into
account physical locality? Its one area that browser
too my knowledge has taken advantage of as yet.
Its not something that easy to do, IP location DB's
help but are often in accurate. You guys with one of
the largest if not the largest server list is out
there could benefit the users significantly by
enhancing the source engine / master server to
take this into account. You already have some of
the building blocks e.g. basic location present.
Gwan, add it to the big todo list :)

Would get a big vote from me, don't see why once a week a check couldn't
be
done on each network for physical location and store that really alongside
servers.

Guys, you do know that there is both a cvar for the server and a /
filter/ in the server browser that lets you search by geographical
region?

I was thinking along the lines of expanding location
which could be provided to the client and server to
be more specific e.g. in our case London, UK.
Take this information and possibly combine it with
automatic feedback about pings from clients, as or
just before they joined servers and use it sort
the returned server list.
From my understanding of the current system it sounds
like its highly likely it would return poor quality
servers being hosted by home users on DSL / Cable as
its basing it on numberical equivalence instead of
location equivalence, is that the case?
