Isn't that quite a big performance hog?

Well, as long as it's just a one-time or once-in-a-while thing, it
shouldn't hurt too much. Have you ever tried to run SRCDS on Linux
emulated by QEMU on Mac OS X? *shrugs* Yay for dual-boot.

However... yuh. If the server doesn't but the clients do have Internet
access (which they probably must have for Steam multiplayer games),
you're placing yourself in a corner... updated clients refuse to play
along with old servers.

Should you want to save yourself a few tons of downloads and you have a
working client installation of, say, Counter-Strike Source (if that's
what you wanna host), you can use GCFScape to unpack the files needed
(as far as I remember, they're "source materials.gcf", "source
models.gcf", "source sounds.gcf" and "counter-strike source
shared.gcf"), zap the files over to your server, let the steam binary
verify and update all the files and thereby save over two gig of
downloads. Worked for me back then... :-)
