As most obvious from the message headers of the first post (made by
Jason), he was cross-posting to [hlds], [hlds_linux] and
[hlds_announce]. In Windows parlance, since the binary "steam.exe" is
already taken, the updating program is called "hldsupdatetool.exe". On
Linux, on the other hand, there was no "steam", so "steam" is used for
the updating program and "hldsupdatetool.bin" is the self-extracting
archive with the license agreement and "steam".
"hldsupdatetool.bin" has just about never been updated since "steam" can
auto-update itself since day 1. (It's nice that on Unix systems, you can
overwrite open files... even running programs. Sure, this can lead to
conflicts, but I just *hate* "Sharing violation" errors on Windows and
wish you could turn them off. If a Unix editor is good enough, it
creates locks and checks for them.)
Obviously, this is confusing. We Linux admins have learned that we have
to do the complementing guesswork each time... maybe it's because Valve
expects us to have more neurons since we're using Linux... or they think
we're third-class citizens. (Second-class: Windows admins, first-class:
Windows players.)

Subject: [hlds_linux] Source Engine Beta Available
A beta for the Source Engine has been released. To start a beta server,
run hldsupdatetool with the command "-beta scrmp0104". Current clients
are compatible on a beta server, and beta clients are able to play on
current public servers. Changes for this beta include:
- Cheat protected many more cvars
- Replaced cl_interp with cl_interp_ratio. Server can limit it with
sv_min_cl_interp_ratio and sv_max_cl_interp_ratio
- Added sv_rcon_log to allow rcon logging to be disabled
We plan to release this next week, please provide feedback promptly.
Thanks,
Jason
