Alfred et Valve,
Ya'll are killing me. I'll have to buy a new server for two of my four
games.
It used to be that windows was the best for DOD servers and then linux
got "fixed". Now I'll probably have to switch back to windows. This is
killing me.
I was hoping that these servers would make it to the release of TF2, but
I doubt that as well. Is there anything on the valve roadmap which
addresses CPU resources w/ the SRCDS engine?
:(

I'm sorry, everybodys CPU is getting crushed by SRCDS.
We used to be able to run 40 player 100 tickrate CS SRCDS's on Opteron 270's
(1 SRCDS per Core) with plugins on Windows 2000 & 2003
We are now running 20 player 66 tickrate CS SRCDS's on the same hardware
with only some Matties scripts and Metamod.
You guys on Linux seem to be suffering even more than us Windows guys, but
never the less, everybody is hurting regardless of hardware/OS combinations.
Sorry

Thanks Whisper. I used your server guide for my base configs and then
tweak them a bit for my Core3 servers. I'm just having a hard time
accepting that a dual opteron is getting crushed.
Next question, does anyone have any suggestions for systems/OS?
On a side note, I did use taskset to set CPU affinity. While the choke
was still present the game did seem to run a bit nicer. I noticed that
studder/rubber band lag was reduced.

DoD is a HLDS based game and tickrate 33 doesn't apply (At least I hope
it
doesn't apply in your case)
DoD:S is a Source based game and the default tickerate is 66. Most CS:S
servers effectively default to 66 tickrate as well, since 33 tickrate
has
proven to be a quite horrible end user experience.

Thanks. So the next question is, how bad will the DOD and DODS servers
perform w/ tickrates of 33?

Increasing the kernel refreshrate will only put more load on your
server. You will need to either decrease the number of slots you are
serving or decrease the tick/ticrates for the servers.
Deacon - Digital Gaming eXtreme wrote:
I agree w/ that. The question is, is there a way to reduce CPU usage
w/o affecting game play? Would a 1000 Hz kernel help here or would I
only gain a small amount of CPU back? Compared to new processors the
Opti 246s aren't the best, but they are work horses that usually do
the
job. That being said, has anyone else run more then 3 32 slot
DODS/DOD
servers on the same machine and if so, did they lag?
On my connection, DSL 6.0/768, I usually have less than 5 choke, but
w/
a good spike I see 25+. Also, players complain that their scoreboard
ping is over 200 when all servers are full. Overall I don't think
the
boxes are performing that bad seeing as their procs are both over 90%
used, but the end users have issues so I have to address them.

Looks to me from the cpu usage you're probably overloading them.

My servers lag. It doesn't get more simple than that. This has
been an
on-going issue w/ my systems for some time now and I'm turning to

I'm running Fedora Core 3 (2.6.12-1.1381_FC3smp #1 SMP) with my Hz

My servers are:
Dual Opteron 246
10K HDD
2 GB RAM
100 Mbps NIC
Layered Tech and EZZI.net data centers.
The main server I'm worried about runs the following games:
2 x 32 DODS (Mani Admin Plugin v1.2BetaR,, MetaMod:Source v1.3d,
Stripper v1.1a, Valve Anti-Cheat, SteamBans SouRCe v2.4)
1 x 32 DOD (LogMod v0.8.0.0, ChickenMod v1.4, AMXMODX v1.75a,
MetaMod
v1.19p28, Valve Anti-Cheat, SteamBans SeRVer v3.4)
1 x 20 Dystopia v1.1 (Valve Anti-Cheat)
For the servers I'm running:
sys_ticrates/ticrate of 66
heapsize of 131072 (256*512). I've also used 262144 (512*512).

For server mgmt I'm using TCAdmin.
I see other servers running multiple games on the same machine, but
I'm
curious if my HW is the problem or if it is a config issue. Any
thoughts on what the issue might be?
Thanks,
