FreeBSD can handle gameservers quite well. I had runned hlds, srcds, q3, q4, bf-serie, ut, ut2k4, to name a few, during the past. This without any real problem and with quite good performance. The only problem for some engines are stability. But that might not be a FreeBSD specific problem, it might crash as much in linux.
The only benefit for getting FreeBSD binaries are to get optimum performance on the platform. The Linux ABI is really good in FreeBSD and with the upcomming 7.x and the SoC it will be even better. I have CURRENT installed on a box and will check out hlds on that server when I have the time. (or rather take the time) Quite some years ago ( 99-00 ??? ), while hlds was still v1.1c. Our FreeBSD based server was considered one of the best online by many of the top swedish players at the time. Also back then I could run 4 servers wo pingbooster on a dual p3 550 and it outperformed other linux boxes when I runned only two and enabled pb. Dont know what I did in the OS, I have never got the same performance since and the configs are long gone due to a harddrive crash. Also a lot of things have changed within the engine since, so I might (probably) never get that performance again. What would be interested is to hear from Valve if they have even tried to compile server binaries for FreeBSD. If it worked and if it benchmarked as good as or better than Linux. If their code is written good enough, it should be just a matter of running make. But I doubt that this is the case. Now back to my vacation. Which includes drinks, wine, food and good company... /Bjorn On Sun, 5 Aug 2007, Patrik Arvhult wrote: > NetBSD also has the capability to run Linux binaries > (gotta supply libraries by setting up some embedded > linux distro).
