If you just install the ncompress package, you can just do what ever u do
normally without fonky stuff...

I don't understand what the problem is here.  I didn't have to jump
through all these hoops to install Steam.  I can't remember exactly but
it seems to me all I did was untar/unzip the hldsupdatetool.bin, execute
that, then procede to use ./steam to install and update mods.

this will work for most distros though if it doesnt you would want to add
~/bin to the search paths for your user
