That's cool; I can do it that way.  Is there a matching solution to protect
our custom sv_pure whitelist?

The deal is that the updater and the installer are the same thing... and
adding / updating those files for a base install changes the checksum of
those files. Like it has been said, you can rename yours and set your cvars
to use those custom ones.. the stock ones can then be overwritten and not
affect you....

If you set the files to read only the updater fails because it cannot write
to those files.
