Interesting you say it's no longer honored... Because, placing this var in my /boot/loader.conf, I am able to run the ./steam -command update -game tf. I tested this by:
Not having debug.mpsafenet in my loader.conf, trying to run steam, getting that error... Rebooting... Same issue... Add that and reboot, issue resolved. So, I don't know WHAT it's changing then... But it's doing something for steam. (I've also removed it and readded it and seen the problem reoccur while it was missing...
