Bang on Neph thanks a lot!
The updater has indeed created a strangely named folder. Looking
deeper with hexdump, it appears the folder is named "orangebox\0x0d"
Something the dev's need to have a look at to see why the updater
would be creating directory such a directory?
I removed the directory and reran the update an the dir was
recreated so I removed ClientRegistry.blob and this seems to
have fixed it so the issue appears to have been some sort of
corruption in ClientRegistry.blob.
I saved the file in case it will help Valve track down the issue
so if you guys want it let me know.
