This "error verifying steam userid ticket"-issue is still around sometimes. But it doesn't seem to be a client-side only problem. Switching an affected gameserver to another machine did "fix" the problem for me (copied files, "copied" ip, new server has same distro, same kernel, just "other" - but quite similar hardware). But that's not really a solution.
