Looks like the self-update fails in mid update.

Try to run a freshly installed steam manually to make sure it's it's up
version 34.
Then remove to writeable mode from the file
$ chmod a-w steam
and test what happens.
If an update is available at a later date it will fail though because steam
not writable.
