Debian Etch is the latest stable. The main reason why it has libc6 2.3 is
because 2.3 still supports kernel 2.4, in the next release of lenny it will
ship with libc6 2.7 which should correct the problem.

If you have the choice of installing a new OS, choose ubuntu, since they
seem to have newer version of most packages. Debian is sometimes doesn't
include newer packages.

I'm looking at possibly trying to get glibc into a .dpkg so I don't have to
run debootstrap.
