All I had to do was issue a quit command to the parent process through telnet. Once I did that the forks shut down, which were already in hibernate, and then the 10 second auto restart kicked in and caused the auto update to happen.
I really need auto update to work. I'm the sole admin and when I'm not around no updates occur. I have to monitor this list for updates or I get emails saying where's the servers. I can ssh in now with the iPhone but that is less than convenient. Valve keeps promising they'll fix this and nothing. The bug list is getting longer and longer.
