Debian Lenny and I have actually two Kernel where it's working fine : 2.6.25
and 2.6.27
gcc version depeding the box I have (4.3.1-9) or (4.3.2-1.1)

I would also recommend you to update your kernel asap because there is a
root exploit working on 2.6.17 - 2.6.24.1
